The Hurley Brook is a short section of water flowing from the 2 pools in Leegomery into farmland by the Hoo Farm roundabout. It is however very important as it is an urban wildlife corridor that serves to connect potential habitats in a built-up area. It is covered by T&W councils “Green Guarantee” which should preserve it from future development but also has the potential to be a nature reserve in the future.
Building on the success of “Friends” groups, such as The Friends of Dot Hill Local Nature Reserve, we plan to create a similar group to monitor the water in the brook and the 2 pools in Apley. For this, the council has recognised the need for such action and is prepared to fund our costs for test equipment. We are also in discussion with Warwick University regarding expanding the monitoring to cover water born antibiotics as part of a national survey.
The results collected will be collected on a data base run by T&W council and Shropshire Wildlife Trust. These data are also available to Severn Trent plc and the Environment Agency. Hopefully, the data will lead to action to improve local water quality as happened when the previous project “Love Your Rivers” was running in the area.
If anyone is interested in volunteering to help with this project or simply would wish to be informed of the testing, please contact Brett Corden.
