On 20th November 2024, the Telford and Wrekin Green Party joined the “Stop SDSC Telford Arms Fair” campaign in solidarity with Quakers, CAAT, XR, STWC, and others. Despite freezing temperatures, we stood together to oppose the Specialist Defence and Security Convention (SDSC) Arms Fair.
The SDSC promotes equipment for special forces and includes arms companies like BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Leonardo, and Elbit Systems. These companies are tied to global conflicts and, in some cases, atrocities such as the genocide in Gaza.
The protest began with banners and speeches that condemned the harm caused by the arms trade. Additionally, Quaker-led poetry and a vigil created moments of reflection. These events welcomed people of all faiths to unite for peace.
However, when security blocked our planned march through the Telford Centre by locking the doors, we responded with a symbolic “die-in” outside. This act highlighted the countless lives lost due to the arms industry.
Meanwhile, the Red Rebels performed a powerful piece, drawing attention to the effects of militarism on children and the planet. At the same time, speeches called for an urgent end to the global arms trade.
In the end, we stood united in solidarity, calling for a future without weapons of war. We envision a world where peace, justice, and sustainability replace profit and violence.
