Season’s Greetings from the Telford and Wrekin Green Party!

On behalf of the Telford and Wrekin Green Party, I would like to wish all our friends, colleagues, and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous New Year. As we approach the end of another incredible year, we reflect on our achievements and look forward to continuing our work for a greener, fairer future.

Celebrating Our Achievements

Looking back over the past year, there’s so much to celebrate. During the general election, both John Adams for Telford and I for The Wrekin had the honour of representing the Green Party. We achieved something amazing—our vote share doubled! This is a huge milestone for us locally, and we’re excited about it.

Thanks to the growing support, we’ve been able to hold the Labour Party accountable. We’ve tackled key issues such as pollution in the River Severn and accessibility for people with disabilities. Our community members were essential in pushing for transparency. As a result, a tribunal ordered Telford and Wrekin Council to release vital documents.

Our Commitment to the Community

Serving the community is at the heart of our work. Our volunteers are actively involved in the eco-friendly Wellington Cycle Delivery Scheme. This program delivers shopping to homes within three miles of Wellington—without harming the planet. Our members have also worked hard to raise awareness and funds for essential medical and baby supplies for Gaza and Palestine.

Collaboration for a Better Future

We’ve teamed up with groups focused on animal rights, environmental issues, and disability rights. Additionally, we offer free advice to families navigating the complex processes of applying for government assistance.

Furthermore, we proudly stand with Telford Together with Refugees in supporting asylum seekers. These individuals have been abandoned by the local council and government, yet they’re eager to work. Basic support would help them contribute, but neglect often leads to homelessness and unemployment.

Tackling Labour’s Shortcomings

While we’re making progress, we can’t ignore some concerning decisions by our local Labour MP. They voted against heating allowances for pensioners and policies aimed at reducing child poverty. Breakfast clubs may be “free,” but they don’t address the root issues.

Our campaigning has also highlighted the gap between Labour’s promises and reality. For example, they reduced bus fares to 50p over Christmas. While this is a step in the right direction, we still have a lot of work to do.

Improving Workers’ Lives

We’re happy to see the National Living Wage set to rise to £12.21 by 2025, which will help around 4,000 workers in our borough. However, we’re pushing for a £15 per hour living wage and a maximum 10:1 pay gap between the highest and lowest earners in businesses.

Thank You to Essential Workers

Finally, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone working over Christmas—those in the NHS, emergency services, armed forces, and essential services. Your dedication keeps us all safe and healthy, and we truly appreciate your commitment.

Remember, we do politics differently, and we promise to always bring you the truth. Here’s to a brighter, greener future together!

Warm wishes,

Pat McCarthy
