Mark Webster

Disabilities Officer

I am the Disabilities Officer for the Telford and Wrekin Green Party.

Growing up in Telford during the early 1980s, my journey took a transformative turn when I joined the armed forces, where I first acquired disabilities.

The experience really reshaped my perspective on life and fuels my commitment to disability advocacy.

Role and Responsibilities

I have two main roles within the Telford and Wrekin Green Party:

Welcoming and Supporting Disabled Members

As the Disabilities Officer, I ensure that all disabled individuals who join the local branch are warmly welcomed and fully included in our activities. I am dedicated to working with disabled members to make necessary adjustments that will allow them to participate actively. My goal is to help them overcome any challenges they may face, enabling full involvement in the Green Party.

Advocacy for Disabled Rights

I am a strong advocate for the rights of disabled people, both within the Green Party and in the broader community. My advocacy efforts extend beyond Telford and Wrekin, impacting the UK as a whole.

In 2023, I led the local campaign to save railway ticket offices, standing in solidarity with unions on picket lines. The Green Party’s unique commitment to this cause sets us apart from Labour, the Tories, and the Liberal Democrats.

Campaigns and Achievements

Challenging Local Authorities

I have consistently challenged the Labour borough council and several parish councils on disability issues, securing numerous improvements for disabled individuals.

Collaborating with West Mercia Police

My advocacy also led to meaningful changes with West Mercia Police, where I successfully prompted commitments to improve services for disabled people.

Promoting Accessible Play Areas

A key focus of my campaigning has been ensuring that play areas are accessible to everyone, benefiting both disabled children and their parents. This ongoing effort helps foster a more inclusive environment in our communities.

Other Activism

My activism extends beyond my official role. I have campaigned for various causes, such as advocating for a ceasefire and aid for Gaza and Palestine, stronger laws against illegal fox hunting, anti-vivisection efforts, and safer streets.

In addition, I’ve submitted over 100 requests through the MyTelford app to improve the local communities of Telford. These requests cover everything from overflowing bins and potholes to getting fly-tips cleared, addressing rat infestations, and resolving noise complaints.

Vision for Inclusion

My vision includes:

– Real inclusion in the educational system

– A social care system free at the point of use

– Active participation for all in political life

– Ending disability discrimination in all forms

– Demanding a full inquiry into benefits-related deaths

– Closing the disability employment gap

The Telford and Wrekin Green Party supports the Disabled People’s Manifesto, advocating for an inclusive society where everyone can lead fulfilling lives and feel valued.
